I recently picked up the new Benefit They’re Real lipstick. It’s basically a lipstick and lip liner in one and it’s safe to say I was intrigued by the concept. When I went into the store in Windsor, the sales lady immediately took me over to them and swatched a few onto my hand. I’m a sucker for a red lipstick but the only red they had in this collection was more of a “pinky” red which was not my cup of tea! I also tried a few of the other shades but really wasn’t impressed and they were not shades I would usually gravitate towards. So, I went for their nude shade “Nude Scandal”. My thought was that you cannot get a bad nude lipstick, right?
On the back of my hand, this shade looked like the perfect nude and the liner was a distinct darker colour than the lipstick shade. Imagining it on my lips, I had to give it a try and hope that this really was a revolutionising product. It wasn’t quite fully matte (matte lipsticks are life for me!) but I was still willing to give it a try so purchased it for the (quite pricey!) price of £16. I have to say, as soon as I tried it on my lips, I was really disappointed! The nude shade was the same colour as my lips but it didn’t even achieve the “my lips but better” results which you’d hope for with a £16 price tag. The idea of the double lip liner/lipstick is great but it really doesn’t work. I couldn’t, no matter how hard I tried, get the liner to look a different shade from the lipstick. It just went on as a slightly glossy (and a bit tacky!) lipstick… I’ve had better feeling and lasting lipsticks which have been half the price. To me, the texture feels similar to a lip balm/creamier lip products which is bizarre as the lady definitely used the word “matte” when trying to sell it to me. Whilst I don’t think the colour is terrible, it definitely doesn’t add anything to my collection and seems way too pricey for what it is.
Benefit have really let me down with this one and it’s a definite beauty regret. No matter how much I’ve tried to wear it as a natural shade to work, it’s not lasted at all on my lips and it doesn’t even appear that great on my lips. I’m usually a huge fan of Benefit, but it’s safe to say that They’re Real Double the Lip lipsticks are a beauty no no for me.
Have any of you tried the Benefit They’re Real lipstick?
